Renters Need Rental Insurance

 If you rent, you need rental insurance.  

Why?

  • REPLACE YOUR PROPERTY LOST IN A FIRE. Rental insurance covers property you lose in a fire or other disaster.  Insurance replaces your furniture, electronics, clothes and more. 
  • HAVE TEMPORARY SHELTER.  Insurance will pay for your hotel or temporary shelter if you lost your apartment due to fire, water damage or another catastrophe.
  • PROTECT YOURSELF.  Your landlord does not have insurance to cover you and your property.
  • IT’S WORTH IT.  Rental insurance for one year is about $150. How much would it cost you to replace all your property?  How much does it cost to stay in a hotel after a fire? The annual cost of rental insurance is      about the cost of one night in a hotel, and after a fire, you face living      in temporary shelter for days and weeks.  Rental insurance will pay      for the temporary housing.

What Should You Do?

  • Contact an insurance agent.  While we cannot make      recommendations, we can suggest you ask friends and families who they use or contact your auto insurance agent.
  • Photograph or video your property room by room to make a record of your belongings.  Keep the photos and video on a flash drive at a family or friends house or upload it to file storage website.  (Do not store the record in your apartment where it will be lost in a      fire.)
  • Estimate the cost to replace your property to make sure the value of your rental insurance will replace your belongings.
  • The amount of Loss of Use, temporary housing, is 20% of the policy value.  20% of a $20,000      policy is $4,000.

Professional Tips

  • If you have auto insurance, talk to your insurance agent about bundling rental and auto insurance to save money. 
  • Ask about paying the insurance premium in monthly payments. (The cost of insurance is called the premium.)
  • Make sure your policy includes “loss of use” or “temporary housing” in the policy.
  • Help from the Red Cross and other charities will be limited.  Rental insurance will give you the money you need for temporary housing and to replace your property.

¿Por qué?

  • REEMPLAZAR SU PROPIEDAD PERDIDA EN UN INCENDIO. El seguro de alquiler cubre la propiedad que pierde en un incendio u otro desastre.  El seguro reemplaza sus muebles, electrónica, ropa y más.
  • TENER UN ALOJAMIENTO      TEMPORAL.  El seguro pagará por su hotel o refugio temporal si perdió su apartamento debido a incendios, daños por agua u otra catástrofe.
  • Protegerse.   Su arrendador no tiene seguro para cubrirle a usted y a su propiedad.
  • Vale la pena.  El seguro de alquiler por un año es de aproximadamente $150. ¿Cuánto te costaría reemplazar toda tu propiedad?  ¿Cuánto cuesta alojarse en un      hotel después de un incendio? El      costo anual del seguro de alquiler es aproximadamente el costo de una      noche en un hotel, y después de un incendio, usted se enfrenta a la vida      en refugio temporal durante días y semanas.  El seguro de alquiler      pagará por la vivienda temporal.

¿Qué debería hacer?
